Nearly 500 lawyers attached to Nilgiri Bar Association (NBA) boycotted court on Monday citing procedural lapses in the arrest of S Thangaraj, judicial magistrate of a fast track court in Coonoor in the Nilgiris on Saturday. "The police did not follow certain procedures in the arrest," said G Anandhan, president, Nilgiri Bar Association. Lawyers in Ooty boycotted court for a day while lawyers attached to the Coonoor bar association threatened to extend it for one more day. "In this situation, if at all an FIR is to be registered, it should be done at the same police station.
Instead, an FIR was registered at Avinashi police station and subsequently transferred to Palladam all women police station. This is the first procedural lapse," said Anandhan. "Secondly, the Nilgiris district magistrate and high court officials should have been informed about the FIR by the police. However, the Nilgiris district magistrate was not informed about the FIR and the subsequent arrest by the police," he added.
