Relief for residents from power cut

Coimbatore city and its rural areas went without power for just two hours a day on Sunday and Monday, providing its residents the much-sought relief from 10 to 14 hours of power cut a day.

An official of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) told that better winds during the two days improved wind energy generation. This helped bring down the load shedding duration. Power cut would continue to be less as long as the wind energy generation was good, the official said.

According to data on the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (Tantransco) website, wind energy generation on Monday morning (December 17) was 1,176 MW. It was 1,073 MW on Sunday morning as against 178 MW on Thursday (December 13).

K. Kasthoorirangaian, chairman of Indian Wind Power Association, said high winds now were unusual and unseasonal. Wind energy generation between May and September this year was about 55 per cent more than last year. Winds were good even on Monday afternoon.

The Tangedco was also providing uninterrupted power supply for four hours a day to 150 feeders here that had a large number of industrial connections.

Further, about 10 industries that had dedicated feeders were receiving uninterrupted power supply for 12 hours a day and purchased power for the remaining 12 hours. There were requests for a similar system from more industries. It would be implemented wherever feasible, the official said.
