All the five platforms at Coimbatore Junction will soon have coach indicators and also a Geographical Information System board with map to show information on trains on a real time basis.
Public Relations Officer of Southern Railway – Salem Division G.V. Venkatesan told reporters here on Tuesday that tenders had been floated for these works.GIS boards would have information in Hindi, English, and Tamil. They would display location of the train, expected time of arrival, and departure.
He said that all the existing benches on platforms were being replaced with granite slabs at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs. Asbestos roofs were being replaced with galvanised sheets at Podanur, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, and Uthukuzhi at a cost of Rs. 1.8 crore.
Waiting rooms were being upgraded at Coimbatore Junction. The second sub-way at the junction would help bring the ramp facility and escalators for differently abled and senior citizens.Mr. Venkatesan said that lack of time and shortage of manpower was hitting the cleaning of coaches. The front elevation of the Coimbatore Junction was being improved at a cost of Rs. 87 lakhs.
